Why Glove Weight Matters
When people talk about boxing glove "weight" — 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz, 16oz — they're referring to the total weight of padding inside the glove, not the size of the hand compartment. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of boxing gear. More padding means more protection for you and your sparring partner, but it also changes how the glove moves and feels on your hand.
The key principle is simple: heavier gloves for contact training, lighter gloves for bags and competition. This isn't arbitrary — it's driven by physics. More padding distributes impact force over a larger surface area, reducing peak force on impact. In sparring, that directly protects your partner's head from unnecessary damage during training.
Glove weight doesn't determine the size of the hand compartment. It determines how much padding surrounds your hand. A 16oz glove is not harder to fit into — it's heavier because it contains significantly more foam padding.
